Neighbor, Friend
Dah-Miin
We have been neighbors of Jian and Dah-Miin since they moved to East Gate Rd. We used to give Halloween parties because as younger couples we didn't mind getting dressed up in crazy costumes and acting like kids.
As we aged a bit we moved on to an open house at Christmas time. I never made things easy for my guests and always had a craft project for them to do. It took a few years for Jian to find his creative streak and decorate a Christmas ornament to hang on a tree they didn't have. Dah-Miin must have been coaching him because he started looking forward to decorating an ornament with New Years wishes and placing it on our tree! One year when I had not planned on this project, he insisted we do it, so in the middle of the party, I went rummaging around the cellar to locate the materials so Jian could make his New Years ornament.
COVID hit our neighborhood hard as it did all close communities. One of the bright spots on the street was Sharon's little tribe out for a walk with Grandma or grandpa to help keep everyone on task. Then the tribe left for CA but Jian and Dah-Miin kept walking and we would invite them to stop and catch up on the neighborhood happenings on our back deck. There wasn't much news because no one was doing much but it was delightful to see them.
Then Byron got married and there was a lot of news. We, however, had to meet Jian and Dah-Miin on their deck while Dah-Miin recovered from her foot injury. How blessed I feel for knowing Dah-Miin for she was one of the most joyful persons I have ever met. She had a smile that brought sunshine even on the darkest day. She radiated a warmth and an interest in all around her. I was so happy when she retired since I was pretty sure she was going to love joining the Garden Club. Dah-Miin will be greatly missed but I will always remember her joy and that smile that brought out the sun on the darkest day.
